Celebrating Apprenticeship Week at Alcedo Care: From First Steps in Care to Leading the Way
This February, we’re proud to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, shining a light on how apprenticeships and ongoing learning help people build meaningful, long-term careers in health and social care.
At Alcedo Care, apprenticeships aren’t just about gaining a qualification – they’re about progression, confidence and creating opportunities. These themes fit perfectly with our Rising Stars programme – a scheme designed to give the talent within our company the chance to shine.
Apprenticeship Week at Alcedo – Michael’s story
A great example of these two schemes work together is Michael Bate, now Area Manager for our Wigan and Warrington branches, whose journey shows just how far a career in care with Alcedo can take you.
Michael began his career in care in 2018, starting in domiciliary care where he spent two years supporting individuals in their own homes. He then moved into a care home setting, progressing to Deputy Manager – a role he loved – before realising his true passion lay in community-based care and supporting people to remain independent at home.
Returning to domiciliary care, Michael continued to develop his skills through a range of roles including Field Care Supervisor, Compliance Officer and Care Coordinator, later expanding into complex care. Ready for his next challenge, he enrolled in the Level 5 Diploma in Adult Care Management and Leadership with Alcedo Care, stepping into the role of Care Manager.
Through continued learning, hands-on experience and strong support, Michael has gone on to excel in leadership and operational roles, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality care. Most recently, he has been promoted to Area Manager, overseeing two branches – a testament to both his commitment and career progression within the sector.
Michael’s story reflects what Apprenticeship Week is all about: opening doors, developing talent and proving that a career in care can grow with you. We’re incredibly proud of our apprentices and colleagues who continue to learn, lead and make a real difference every day.
If you’re considering a career in care, an apprenticeship with Alcedo Care could be the first step in a journey just like Michael’s.
