In 2022, Gav’s world changed forever. While working high above the ground on a pylon in Tamworth, Gav fell more than 50 feet. In a single moment, life as he knew it was gone. The injuries he sustained were catastrophic: severe spinal fractures, a spinal cord injury resulting in T8 paraplegia, a traumatic brain injury, multiple broken bones, and internal injuries that would later lead to sepsis, a colostomy, and kidney failure requiring weeks of dialysis and rehabilitation.
But the physical injuries were only part of Gav’s battle. Gav spent a year in rehabilitation, enduring pain, surgeries, uncertainty, and the overwhelming realisation that his life would never return to how it once was. When he was finally discharged, he moved into temporary accommodation in Anglesey with the support of a live-in care team.
This was one of the lowest points of Gav’s life. Adjusting to a spinal injury, learning to depend on full-time care, and coming to terms with the loss of independence he once had left Gav feeling broken and lost. He struggled emotionally and mentally, finding it hard to see a future for himself. There were days when simply getting through the day felt like an impossible task.
But Gav did not give up. With time, compassion, and the steady presence of those around him, small changes began to happen. Slowly, almost imperceptibly at first, Gav started to take steps forward. He moved into a more suitable home in his hometown of Bangor, a move that brought comfort, familiarity, and a renewed sense of belonging.
Friends, family and small steps forward
A huge source of motivation came from Gav’s incredible family friendship group. Regular gym sessions with his close friend Taffy became about far more than physical fitness, they were moments of normality, laughter, and shared determination. These friendships reminded Gav that is valued, supported, and deeply cared for. Then came Marley.
Deciding to get a puppy was a brave step, and one that changed everything. Marley gave Gav a reason to get up in the morning, a sense of responsibility, and unconditional love. With the help of his live-in carers, who supported Marley’s care and training, Gav found joy again, the kind of joy that heals in ways medicine cannot.
In 2024, Gav met Kirsty. From the very beginning, it was clear that this was something special. Kirsty saw Gav not for his injuries, but for the man he is, strong, kind, and deeply loving. Alongside her son Logan, they became Gav’s family, his motivation, and his future. Where once there had been loneliness and uncertainty, there was now laughter, warmth, and hope.
A forever home and a new future
Today, Gav has taken another incredible step forward. He has purchased his forever home near the sea in Bangor and is currently renovating it to create a home for himself, Kirsty, Logan, and hopefully a new baby in the years to come.
Having reached a place of stability, confidence, and happiness, Gav has made the decision to close his chapter with Alcedo Care. As he moves forward, Kirsty will now support him as his main carer, and together they will begin this next chapter side by side.
Gav’s journey has not been easy. It has been marked by pain, loss, and unimaginable challenges. But it is also a story of resilience, love, and the quiet strength it takes to rebuild a life from the ground up.
