National Schizophrenia Awareness Day takes place on 25 July 2026, encouraging honest discussion about a condition still surrounded by damaging myths and misunderstanding. Schizophrenia can affect how someone thinks, feels and interprets the world, but it does not define their identity, abilities or future.
The Rethink Mental Illness charity estimates that schizophrenia affects around one in every 100 people, making informed awareness and accessible support particularly important. This awareness day asks everyone to look beyond assumptions, listen to lived experience and recognise each person as an individual.

Understanding needs
People living with schizophrenia may experience hallucinations, delusions, disorganised thinking, reduced motivation or difficulties managing everyday routines. Symptoms and support requirements vary considerably, while periods of stability can be interrupted by relapse, crisis or significant changes in circumstances.
At Alcedo Care, we support National Schizophrenia Awareness Day and recognise that effective support must respond to the complete person, rather than concentrating solely upon a diagnosis. As demand for complex care at home continues to increase, personalised and clinically informed support is becoming increasingly important for individuals, families and communities.
Alcedo mental health home care services
Alcedo Care provides specialised, nurse-led mental health care within people’s homes, supported living services and other community environments. Our support can range from scheduled one-to-one visits, to enhanced observations and individually designed care packages, delivered throughout the day and night.
Alcedo Registered Mental Health Nurses provide clinical oversight, working alongside families, commissioners, local authorities, NHS teams and other professionals involved in each person’s care. Our trauma-informed approach places dignity, safety and least restrictive practice at the centre of every package.
Care plans can include crisis management, relapse prevention, risk management, psychosocial support and strategies for managing behaviours of concern. We also use Positive Behaviour Support and low-arousal approaches to reduce anxiety, understand underlying needs and promote greater stability.
Supporting independence within the community
Remaining at home can provide continuity, familiarity and reassurance, while enabling people to retain meaningful relationships, routines and community connections. Our objective is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help individuals achieve a safe, purposeful and fulfilling life. Support is adapted as needs change, with multidisciplinary expertise available for complex physical, behavioural and mental health requirements.
National Schizophrenia Awareness Day: an important opportunity
National Schizophrenia Awareness Day provides an important opportunity to challenge stigma and improve understanding. It also reminds us that compassionate, clinically informed community care can support recovery, reduce avoidable hospital admissions and protect individual independence.
