Tuesday the 4th of February marks World Cancer Day; an international day to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. The primary goal of the day is to significantly reduce the illness and death caused by cancer. It is currently considered that more than a third of cancer cases are preventable and another third could be cured if detected early and properly treated.
The 4th of February is also an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer. It also targets misinformation, raises awareness, and reduces the stigma of cancer.
Over 100 Countries
World Cancer Day was established in Paris on 4th February 2000 at the World Cancer Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium.
Since then the day has been marked by the international cancer community, governments, organisations and individuals throughout the world.
Over 1,000 activities take place in over 100 different countries to show support for those affected by cancer.

#NoHairSelfie
One of these activities is #NoHairSelfie, a global movement to have “hairticipants” shave their heads either physically or virtually to show a symbol of courage for those undergoing cancer treatment. Images of participants are then shared all over social media.
Supporting World Cancer Day
Alcedo Care supports World Cancer Day and is raising awareness of this important initiative throughout the week. Our carers extend the utmost dedication and compassion to not only our clients who are suffering with cancer, but also to their support network of family and friends.
