What is Supported living?
Supported living is the term given to a range of services designed to help people retain their independence in their local community.
Supported living was developed as an alternative to institutional care for people with disabilities in the 1990’s. The main principles of supported living are that people with disabilities, including cognitive and learning disabilities, own or rent their home and have control over the support they get, who they live with, if anyone, and how they live their lives. Supported living assumes that all people with disabilities, regardless of the level or type of disability, are able to make choices about how to live their lives, even if the person does not make choices in conventional ways.
The Principles of Supported Living
Supported living has no legal definition but has a commonly accepted set of principles. These include:
- I choose who I live with
- I choose where I live
- I have my own home
- I choose how I am supported
- I choose who supports me
- I get good support
- I choose my friends and relationships
- I choose how to be healthy and safe
- I choose how to take part in my community
- I have the same rights and responsibilities as other citizens
- I get help to make changes in my life
Previously, housing and support would usually have been provided by a charity or local council. Today however, independent care organisations such as Alcedo Care are able to deliver support to individuals, to help them continue to live in their own homes and communities, maintaining their dignity and quality of life.
Disabilities
Alcedo Care deliver supported living services to many people living with disability, including learning disabilities, mental health issues and supporting people who have Autism.
Strict Compliance
All our supported living carers have passed through our strict compliance procedure and are fully vetted, DBS checked, referenced and have experience delivering quality care in a supported living environment.

Continuous, Reliable Service
Alcedo Care focusses on delivering a continuous, reliable service for any supported living unit and understands the importance of continuity of care staff. It is our aim to always send you the same faces and to work with you to deliver a long-term, consistent solution. To further facilitate this, we offer excellent temporary to permanent employment options.
We also deliver a 24/7, 365 days a year on-call service, so that if you require cover, or have an emergency requirement for cover, we are always on hand.
