Mental Health Awareness Week: Practical Support at Home from Alcedo Care
Mental Health Awareness Week is led by the Mental Health Foundation and runs from 11–17 May 2026. This year’s theme is “Every action counts – for yourself, for someone else, for all of us.”
For Alcedo Care, this message reflects the work we do every day. Mental health affects confidence, independence, relationships, physical health and daily routine. When someone is struggling, timely support can make a real difference.

Why action matters
Awareness is important, but action is what changes outcomes. People experiencing mental health difficulties often need calm, consistent and practical support. This may include help with personal care, meals, medication prompts, appointments, sleep routines, social contact and daily structure. For some people, it may also involve higher levels of observation, risk management and specialist support. Early action can reduce pressure on families. It can also help prevent difficulties from escalating into crisis.
Recognising when support is needed
Mental health problems do not always appear suddenly. Families may notice small but important changes. These can include withdrawal, low mood, anxiety, poor sleep, missed medication, reduced personal care or loss of routine. Some people may also show increased distress, self-neglect or risky behaviour. These signs should not be ignored. They are often a signal that structured support is needed.
Mental health care at home
For many people, home is the safest place to receive care. It is the familiar environment that allows people to stay close to family, routine and community.
Alcedo Care provides mental health home care from hourly one-to-one support to 24/7 live-in care. Support is shaped around the individual, not just their diagnosis. Care may include daily structure, companionship, personal care, medication support, appointment help, relapse planning and family communication.
Supporting independence
Good mental health care should protect independence, not remove it. The aim is to help people regain confidence, safety and control. Progress may be gradual. Getting washed, eating properly, attending an appointment or reconnecting with others can all be important steps. Small, consistent actions often create the strongest foundations for recovery and stability.
A regulated approach to care
Alcedo Care is regulated by the Care Quality Commission in England and Care Inspectorate Wales in Wales. This provides families with reassurance about the quality, safety and accountability of the care we deliver.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, the message is clear. Take mental health seriously, act early and seek the right support. For many people, that support can be delivered safely at home.
