How Home Care Keeps Couples Together
Looking for care homes for couples? They say home is where the heart is, why not consider home care for couples as an alternative?
For many couples, the idea of growing old together is a romantic one – childhood sweethearts together forever. However for many, time can bring challenges that threaten this vision. This might either be due to aging, or due to unexpected illnesses or incidents that bring around the need for clinical care and support. When health risks families being separated, home care services can be a game changer, allowing couples to defy the odds and stay together in the place they call home – after all, home is where the heart is!
Shared independence
Think of home care as a helping hand, not a replacement for independence. It provides tailored support for individual needs, ensuring both partners retain as much independence while receiving the assistance they require. This means being free to continue to enjoy hobbies, days out and holidays.
Preserving a lifetime of memories
For many elderly couples, navigating routine requiring short term memories can be daunting. Here’s where home care steps in, not just with practical tasks like personal care, medication assistance and meal preparation (all of which our carers can assist with), but also with activities that spark joy and connection. Engaging couples in precious memories and family photos, puzzles, familiar music or a day out to their favourite place stimulates cognitive well-being while strengthening their bond.
Eileen & Brian’s Story

Our Lancaster home care team support childhood sweethearts Eileen and Brian, who recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. During their amazing 70 years they have both travelled to many places – they say that Monaco is by far their favourite place. They have shared many happy and amazing memories and have both lived through many memorable times throughout their life. But they are still very happily in love to the present day. We are pleased to be able to support them to remain independent, living in their family home.
Supporting Independence, Empowering Choices
For fiercely independent spirits, home care allows the joy of living on your own terms that a residential setting often can’t offer. It respects privacy, with visits when and for however long you need them, or can be around the clock for those that need more intensive care. Our local branch terms can match clients with carers who can help them get out and about, carrying out errands, helping clients get to education or work, and ensuring they maintain active social lives and much-loved hobbies.
Diverse care for diverse lives
Many will look for care homes for couples to help them with a number of factors. Whether it’s for respite, complex nursing, dementia or general home care, our care assistants can visit to help with all the same day-to-day needs that your loved one would receive in a care home. We can support older couples with:
- Personal care – this can include toileting, bathing and getting dressed
- Assistance with mobility, including the use of hoists
- Administering and recording medication
- Complex care such as tracheostomy care, diabetes management or gastrostomy care
- Providing meal preparation
- Light housekeeping
- Companionship
Joanne & Paul’s Story
We recognise that for some couples, a private house isn’t necessarily the place they call home. We also provide care for people in shared accommodations and supported living settings. Over in our Blackpool supported living house, we care for the lovely Joanne and Paul, who have been together for over 10 years.
They originally met at their previous supported living house and have been together ever since. They enjoy spending time together and going for days out around their local areas and have even enjoyed going on holidays together.
Paul is a true gentleman and always spoils Joanne on Valentine’s Day with flowers and other gifts – we have no doubt this year will be no different!
