Epilepsy & seizure management, support & nursing at home
Living with epilepsy can present numerous challenges for individuals, impacting their daily lives and overall well-being. Managing this neurological disorder requires specialised care and support to ensure safety, comfort, and a higher quality of life. Alcedo Care, a leading provider of home care services, recognises the unique needs of individuals with epilepsy and offers comprehensive solutions tailored to their specific requirements. By combining compassionate caregivers with advanced technology and personalised care plans, Alcedo Care strives to empower epilepsy patients, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives within the comfort of their own homes.
Why choose home care for epilepsy patients?
According to the Voice for Epilepsy, epilepsy is the 4th most common neurological condition that affects the brain and nervous system, causing seizures, which can vary in intensity and duration, affecting individuals differently.
Living with epilepsy often necessitates careful monitoring, medication management, and seizure response protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of the person affected. For many epilepsy patients, the home environment provides a sense of security and familiarity. By receiving care at home, individuals can maintain their independence, comfort, and connection to their communities. Epilepsy home care also enables loved ones to actively participate in the care process, providing a supportive environment that promotes emotional well-being.
Alcedo Care’s complex care team offers support for all ages – we support children with epilepsy and their families, as well as young adults and elderly service users with epilepsy or seizures.
How does Alcedo Care support epilepsy care at home?
Personalised Care Plans
Alcedo Care understands that each individual’s journey with epilepsy is unique. Our nurse-led complex care team, along with your local branch, will collaborate closely with our clients, their families, and any other multi-disciplinary teams, including doctors, case managers or social workers, to develop personalised care plans. These plans are based on the client’s epilepsy care plans created by epilepsy nurses and consultant neurologists, and will consider factors such as seizure frequency, medication management, dietary restrictions, lifestyle preferences, and any other support requirements.
Expertly trained care teams
Alcedo Care’s care teams are extensively trained to provide specialised care for epilepsy patients. Our dedicated in-house trainers, as well as our nursing team, enable our carers to gain a deep understanding of the condition so that they are skilled in seizure recognition, response, and safety protocols. Our care assistants are able to offer companionship, emotional support, medication reminders, and any other assistance you may need to live comfortably day-to-day in your own home, as well as getting out in the community.
Medication management
Adhering to medication schedules is crucial for epilepsy patients. Our carers help with our clients’ prescribed medication regimen, ensuring they receive the right doses at the right times. Our electronic MAR charts allow our branch teams to monitor closely to ensure care plans are being met. We can also work with MDT and other healthcare providers to communicate any concerns or changes in the client’s condition.
In an emergency, a client might need rescue medication such as buccal midazolam. Our carers are highly skilled in managing these situations and providing a rapid response.
Emotional support
To us, care isn’t just about the physical needs. Our carers and clients build true bonds, and we try to have a positive impact on not only our clients’ emotional well-being but also their families’ too. A friendly voice at the end of the phone and a friendly face in the home can be a great comfort for those living with epilepsy.
