World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7th April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as other related organisations.
First held in 1948, World Health Day is held to mark the WHO’s founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organisation to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year. It is one of eight official global health campaigns marked by the WHO.
The day is acknowledged internationally by governments and non-governmental organisations with interests in public health issues, who also organise activities and highlight their support in media reports and online.

International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife
The WHO organises international, regional and local events on World Health Day each year, related to a particular theme. This year, 2020 marks the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Nurses and midwives play a key role in caring for people everywhere, including in times of outbreaks and settings that are fragile or in conflict. So this year’s day celebrates all Nurse and Midwife professionals across the globe, who dedicate themselves to delivering us the highest possible standards of care, wherever they are.
At the Forefront of the COVID-19 Response
Nurses and all care workers are currently at the forefront of the COVID-19 response, providing high quality, respectful treatment and care, leading community dialogue to address fears and questions and in some instances, collecting data for clinical studies. Quite simply, without nurses and care workers, there would be no COVID-19 response.
