Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week is taking place this year from the 18th – 24th of May. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is kindness.
Founded in 1949, the Mental Health Foundation is a charity that relies on public donations and grant funding to deliver and campaign for good mental health for all. Today the Mental Health Foundation works directly with and learns from people who experience mental health problems, in order to develop a better understanding of mental health and to raise greater awareness.
Firm Fixture on Calendar
In a world that is increasingly opening up to and understanding those with mental health issues, it is no surprise that Mental Health Awareness Week is now a firm fixture on calendars around the UK and beyond. During Mental Health Awareness Week, hundreds of events take place around the country to raise awareness for mental health. Schools, businesses, community groups and even people in their own homes host events to raise money for the Mental Health Foundation.

The Likelihood of Developing a Mental Health Problem
The likelihood of developing a mental health problem is influenced by our biology, and by the circumstances in which we are born, grow, live and age. Those who face the greatest disadvantages in life also face the greatest risks to their mental health.
Mental Health Prevention & Support
There are several different levels of mental health prevention and support which can be applied together to deliver targeted help to those most at-risk.
Primary Support is aimed at stopping mental health problems before they occur and promoting good mental health for all.
Secondary Support, also known as selective, or targeted support, is aimed those at higher risk of mental health problems, either because of the biological characteristics they were born with, or experiences they have had. This is achieved by providing a bespoke package, developed to support the individual’s specific needs.
Tertiary Support is aimed at helping people living with mental health problems to stay well and enjoy a good quality of life. Tertiary support is seen as distinct from, but complementary to other treatments for mental health problems and is often carried out in the community, rather than in clinical settings.
